What should I do if I am sick with Influenza Like Illness (Seasonal flu viruses)?
- Self-isolate – stay home and limit contact with others including avoiding travel and not going to work or school for at least 24 hours after your fever is gone (100° F [37.8°C] as measured without the use of fever-reducing medicine). This will decrease the chance of spreading the virus to other people.
- Treat mild symptoms with rest and fluids.

It is expected that most people will recover from ILI without needing medical care. In adults, emergency warning signs that need urgent medical attention include:
- difficulty breathing or shortness of breath
- pain or pressure in the chest or abdomen
- sudden dizziness
- severe or persistent vomiting
- flu-like symptoms improve but then return with fever and worse cough.
What are the responsibilities of students?
All students are asked to:
- Declare absences due to influenza like illness (ILI) online on the Student Services Centre (SSC).
- Additionally, you may advise your professors and instructors electronically if you are ill and will be absent.
- Remain at home and away from class, labs, social gatherings, sports, etc until at least 24 hours after you are free of fever (100° F [37.8°C]) without the use of fever-reducing medications.
- Follow recommendations provided by the Interior Health Authority (http://www.interiorhealth.ca/) and the UBC O to help stop the spread of infection.
- Monitor ok.ubc.ca for the latest official information on ILI at UBC O.
- Have a personal preparedness plan should you or a family member become ill (www.fightflu.ca)
*Note that the University is not requiring a medical certificate for ILI absences except under compelling circumstances.
