National Pollutant Release Inventory

The National Pollutant Release Inventory (NPRI) is Canada’s legislated, publicly-accessible inventory of pollutants released, disposed of and recycled by industrial, institutional and commercial facilities across the country.

It is used for identifying and monitoring sources of pollution and developing indicators for air, land, and water quality.

Under this legislation, the University would need to provide Environment Canada with an annual report of contaminants released to air (carbon monoxide, oxide of nitrogen, and particulate matter) by Facilities Management.  Based on calculations of contaminants for 2008, UBC Okanagan is under the threshold for reporting but will continue to monitor the University’s status as growth continues.

For more information on criteria air contaminants, see also Criteria Air Contaminants and Related Pollutants (Environment Canada).
